Urad dal flour can be easily made at home. Urad dal is a staple ingredient in many Indian recipes, including idli, dosai, vadai, murukku. As the festival is around the corner, this flour comes in handy to prepare the festive sweets and snacks. Even though it is readily available at super markets, making it at home is easy and budget friendly. Learn how to make urad dal flour at home with step by step pictures.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Whole White Urad dal

Instructions

  • Take a heavy bottom kadai. Add in urad dal and start roasting on a low flame till it is roasted, the colour should get darker and light golden.
  • Now remove it to a plate and allow it to cool down. Once cooled take it in a trusty blender and powder it finely.
  • Now sift them. You can add the coarse mixture to the next batch which you grind. Spread it on a newspaper. Allow it so it cools down. Store this in an air tight container.

Notes

  • Roast the urad dal in a heavy bottomed pan. Make sure the flame is low to medium.
  • Don’t burn the urad dal while roasting.
  • Don’t use split urad dal for preparing the flour.
  • After roasting, cool down the urad dal completely. Once it is cooled down, grind them into a fine powder.
  • Sieve the powdered urad dal flour to ensure small granules are removed. Spread the powder in a newspaper or kitchen towel and dry them.

Storage 

Store it in an airtight container for freshness. Store in cool and dry places to avoid rancid.
